Who is Somara Theodoreʼs Partner Nelson? How They Met and More
The Good Morning America Weekend weather presenter, Somara Theodore, is building a new life with Nelson after losing her sister and ending her marriage in 2024

Somara Theodore has found love again after one of the hardest years of her life. The ABC News meteorologist is expecting her first child with her partner Nelson, a close friend from college who became something more during her darkest moments.
After losing her sister to cancer and getting divorced in 2024, Somara is now preparing to welcome a baby in late December 2025.
Who Is Somara Theodore’s Partner?
Somara Theodoreʼs partner is Nelson, a close friend she met in college. The two were acquaintances for years before their relationship deepened after Somara’s divorce and her sister’s death in 2024.
“We met in college, and we were just acquaintances over the years,” Somara explained, in an August 2025 interview with Essence. But their bond grew stronger at a time she wasn’t expecting it. Nelson is now documenting their pregnancy journey on Instagram under the username @dadunderconstruction.
According to Somara, Nelson took care of her sister while she was in the hospital before her sister’s passing. This act of kindness during such a difficult time showed the depth of his character and care for Somara, which ultimately, resulted to a romantic relationship.
How Did Somara Theodore and Nelson Get Together?
Somara Theodore reconnected with Nelson in the midst of her grief following her sister’s death and her divorce. Their friendship from college evolved into a romantic relationship during one of the most challenging periods of her life.
Somara soft-launched her relationship with Nelson on January 8, 2025, by posting about her partner on social media. By June 17, 2025, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together.
“Going through a divorce in your early 30s is certainly not necessarily what you have on the docket when you do get married, but I can say it’s a learning experience,” Somara said.
“We can’t change the past, but we can certainly change the way we view the past, and that has been integral in my maintaining a new, healthy relationship.”

What Does Somara Theodore Say About Her Relationship With Nelson?
Somara Theodore describes her baby’s dad, Nelson, as someone who challenges her every day in the best ways. Their relationship is built on a foundation of friendship and deep understanding that developed over many years.
“He is someone who challenges me every day in the best ways,” she said of their relationship. She also acknowledged that letting go of control hasn’t come easily, but it has served her well in building this new partnership.
For someone used to carrying others and maintaining independence, learning to be vulnerable and receive support was difficult. “I am absolutely not a person who finds it easy to be carried. I’m like, put me down, I can walk,” Theodore admits. “It is hard to relinquish that independence. It’s hard to acknowledge that you just don’t have it all right now.”
But Nelson’s presence during her most vulnerable moments helped her open up to love again.

Is Somara Theodore Planning to Marry Nelson?
While Somara Theodore and Nelson are building a life together and expecting their first child, she’s in no rush to get married again. Her divorce has changed her perspective on marriage, making her more intentional about taking her time.
“Divorce has changed my perspective on marriage,” she explained. “I find it to be very sacred, and very holy, and I know that I want to take my time. When I get married again, I want it to be a celebration of a confirmation of commitment already made and done.”
She added, “So, I look forward to continuing to grow and build with the father of my child in the coming years and enjoying this new journey that we’re on together into parenthood.”
Their foundation of friendship and love, she says, is strong enough for now. Marriage will come when they’re both ready to celebrate a commitment they’ve already built together.

What Happened During Somara Theodore’s Pregnancy?
Somara Theodore’s pregnancy journey has required medical intervention. On August 22, 2025, she announced that she needed to undergo surgery to keep her baby alive and kicking.
Somara revealed she has an incompetent cervix or short cervix, which means her cervix is too short to safely carry her baby to term. Fortunately, her surgery was successful. On August 30, 2025, Somara posted an update revealing that her cervix was stitched together to keep her baby safe. She was five months pregnant at the time of the procedure.
“Update: my partner baby and I are doing well. As of now, I’m on bedrest moderately. While I’m happy this means babies growing safely, I do miss bringing you all your weather forecast,” she wrote.
She’s been transparent about her pregnancy complications because she wants others facing similar situations to know they’re not alone.
What Happened to Somara Theodore in 2024?
The year 2024 shook Somara Theodore to her core. She lost her sister Simone to cancer, ended her marriage to Carl C. Scott, and was forced to relocate, all within a short, painful window of time.
“I had to take care of my sister, who was sick with cancer. We buried her a few weeks after that. I had to go to court to get divorced, and then a week after that, I moved into a new place,” she recalled.
Somara’s sister Simone was diagnosed with cancer in 2023 and passed away in October 2024 at just 29 years old. Just days after her sister’s death, Somara filed for divorce from her husband Carl C. Scott, whom she had married in August 2019.
She wrote on social media: “I’ve grappled thru the death and burial of my 29 year old sister. I’ve held myself gracefully thru my divorce. Dealt with external and internal injuries. And 3 of those happened inside of 10 days.”
How Did Somara Theodore Cope With Her Sister’s Death?
Watching her sister Simone succumb to cancer left Somara with immense grief and complicated remorse. She dedicated herself to protecting her little sister, sometimes prioritizing protection over just being present as a sister.
“I would make sure everything was good with her the same way a parent would, but I know deep down what she wanted and what she needed was a sister,” she recalled. “My fear of her getting hurt, or my fear of her not surviving, for whatever reason, trumped just being in the moment and being the sister she needed.”
After Simone’s death, Somara experienced survivor’s guilt. “Watching her succumb to her illness left me with a survivor’s guilt,” she shared. “You do wish so bad that you could just give them your life. Sometimes, there were moments where I would think as a kid, if I could just take my sister’s soul and put it in my body.”
Still, her community reminded her she didn’t have to grieve alone. “When we had to plan my sister’s funeral, I could not believe the outpouring of support I got from all my friends around me,” she said. “Having a village is what carried me when I couldn’t carry myself.”

The hole left by her sister’s passing may never completely fade, but now it lives alongside joy. Her heart, she says, has room for both grief and happiness.
“I am looking forward to my heart just expanding, growing, and feeling this new love that I didn’t know was possible,” she said.
